Former pop singer Gary Glitter is to seek a further reduction of his jail term in Vietnam, according to his lawyer.
Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was jailed for three years in the south-east Asian country in March last year after being convicted of molesting two girls aged ten and 11.
The 62-year-old has already had his sentence cut by three months after a national amnesty earlier this year and Glitter's lawyer, Le Thanh Kinh, confirmed that he would be seeking another reduction later this month.
"My client will certainly submit a letter asking for another six-month reduction of his prison term once the Vietnamese authorities announce the plan for amnesty on Liberation Day," he said in a statement.
Liberation Day falls on April 30th and is one of the several special days in the year when prison inmates can apply for special consideration for a reduction of their custodial sentence on the grounds of good behaviour.
Glitter was jailed in Vietnam in November 2005 and under national law must serve at least half of his sentence. This means he could be released as early as next month.
As a non-Vietnamese national, Glitter is likely to be deported to the UK upon his release unless the government decides not to accept him, in which case he would be forced to seek residence elsewhere.
He has already been permanently expelled from neighbouring Cambodia and has served a two-month jail term in Britain for possession of child pornography in 1999.
