A male teenager shot in east London last night was the victim of a drive-by shooting, police have revealed.

The unnamed 19-year-old is in a critical condition in hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to his head on Harold Road, Plaistow, at about 19:20 BST on Monday.

In today's appeal the Metropolitan police urged anyone with potential information on the attack to contact them immediately.

The victim is Asian but police insist they are keeping an open mind regarding any possible motives for the shooting. One man was arrested last night in connection with the attack.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area and saw the incident to come forward as soon as possible," said the Met's Detective Sergeant Paul Chapman.

"This was a drive-by shooting and we would particularly like to speak to anyone who subsequently saw a vehicle speeding from the area in the direction of Green Street."

Last month 15-year-old Adam Regis was stabbed to death on a nearby Plaistow street, with both that and last night's incident occurring close by to West Ham United's Upton Park football stadium.
