Consumers must ensure that they are able to effectively manage credit - so as to safeguard themselves from unmanageable debt, a UK charity has said.

Frances Walker, from financial assistance charity the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), says that many people get themselves into difficulties by misusing credit and failing to make sure they get the best deal.

"Credit is obviously here to stay. People have got to learn how to use credit properly," Ms Walker commented.

Talking about people who get themselves into debt problems she said that approximately "50 per cent is through misuse of credit".

"Sometimes it's unforeseen things that help people to go into debt."

"Where you have credit you're always going to have some element of over-indebtedness because you're always going to have the unexpected, like divorce, separation, or ill health, or whatever, so you really need a safety net in place to help those people out," she added.
