At least 24 people have been killed in Baghdad after a series of bombs and mortars targeted the Iraqi capital.
Eighteen people died and more than 50 were wounded in a triple car bombing in the al-Shurta district, which was followed by mortar rounds in a seemingly coordinated insurgent strike upon the busy market.
Eyewitness reports say that women and children are among the casualties as a result of the attacks, which took place in a mostly Shia Muslim area.
Several hours later a suicide bomber left six people dead after detonating his explosive belt while on a bus in northern Baghdad.
Yesterday a suicide car bomber killed at least 40 people in the Shia Muslim holy town of Karbala.
And moments before the sectarian attack in Baghdad - 70 miles to the north-east - a truck bomber detonated himself at a checkpoint on the Jadriyah bridge, killing ten people.
A US-led security crackdown is still being enforced in the Iraqi capital, but while the number of targeted sectarian killings has fallen, it is proving virtually impossible to prevent suicide and car bombings.
