A British soldier has died in Iraq following a road traffic accident, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

The soldier from the Royal Signals was at the Contingency Operating Base at Basra air station when the accident happened at about 08:00 local time (05:00 BST).

He was riding his bike when the accident occurred.

"He was evacuated by ambulance to the field hospital, but sadly died of his injuries," a statement from the MoD said.

His death brings the total number of British soldiers killed in Iraq to 147 during the last four years.

The soldiers' next of kin have been informed and asked for a period of grace before releasing his name to the media.
