BT is winning the race to become the UK's leading broadband provider, according to the latest research.

A new study, carried out by a British comparison service, reveals that BT now has over 3.7 million broadband customers - with Virgin Media the only other company close to providing any real competition.

"We are now talking about a two man race between BT and Virgin Media," said Steve Weller, an official from the company that carried out the research.

"BT has made massive strides with 3.7 million broadband customers announced today against Virgin Media's 3.4 million. The two front runners are putting some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack which is fast falling behind," he continued.

"Contenders need to up their pace pronto if they stand any chance of getting back in the running."

Mr Weller continued by stating that there were 0.8 million new broadband connections established during the last three months - a figure that indicates that broadband providers still have plenty of new custom to target in the UK.
