The awareness of energy saving among small businesses is increasing, according to an expert.

npower's head of business sales, Raymond McGloin, stated that research by the supplier has shown that understanding on the issue has increased in recent years.

He added that the rising price of oil seems to be a key factor in "driving" awareness on the issue.

"I think generally people are starting to see that energy is no longer a commodity; [it]has moved itself into a price bracket where it's starting to push prices up everywhere," he explained.

"What we're seeing now is that people are becoming more aware that energy saving is needed."

Previous research by npower found that around two-thirds of business employees felt their company wasted energy.

It was also found that 25 per cent believe it is difficult to get staff in their workplace to take energy saving action, while one in five also claimed they did not know how to introduce such initiatives.
