A heroin addict who killed his three-month-old child with a lethal cocktail of drugs has been found guilty of manslaughter at Leicester crown court.
Nathan Grain, 34, of Shepshed in Leicestershire, fed his son Luke small doses of heroin substitute methadone and the tranquiliser diazepam in January 2006. His infant child died as a result.
Grain broke down in tears in court today as he explained he fed his child the drugs because he wanted the baby, who was teething at the time, to stop crying.
Grain was remanded in custody until his sentencing, which has been scheduled for June 7th.
Judge Michael Pert told him that he should expect to spend a lengthy amount of time in jail. "It's inevitably going to be prison and a substantial prison sentence," he said.
Meanwhile Luke's great aunt, Denise Chaplin, told reporters outside the court that she was angry that Grain had attempted to place the blame for the child's death on her sister.
"No amount of time for Grain to be in prison is worth baby Luke's life but at least it is the end of this sickening story," the Press Association quoted her as saying.
