Prince Harry will serve in Iraq, the head of Britain's military has said.
Chief of staff General Sir Richard Dannatt, who made headlines last year by admitting that British forces in Afghanistan were overstretched, revealed that he has decided to send the third-in-line to the throne to a major conflict zone.
Last week the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that the planned deployment of the 22-year-old prince was under a permanent state of review, following reports that senior officers were considering preventing his posting.
"The decision has been taken that he will deploy. I will of course keep that decision continually under review, and if circumstances are such that I change that decision, I will make a further statement," Gen Dannatt told the BBC.
Concerns had been raised about the potential targeting of Prince Harry by terrorists amid a recent spate of fatalities among UK troops operating in the south of Iraq.
"Prince Harry's deployment to Iraq is under constant consideration," an MoD spokeswoman said, insisting that no major change had been made since last week's announcement.
"Our intent is still that Prince Harry will deploy as a troop leader."
