A young boy has died after falling into a pond in Greater Manchester.

The ten-year-old, who has not been named, fell into the water at John Pit pond at Standish Lower Ground in Wigan yesterday.

He was pulled from the pond and taken to hospital by air ambulance but died in the early hours of the morning.

"Officers arrived at the scene to find members of the public were in the process of rescuing the boy. He was not conscious or breathing, so police officers performed CPR on him," a spokesperson for Greater Manchester police said.

"The north-west air ambulance was called and arrived at the scene just before 16:05 BST."

The boy was initially taken to Preston Royal Infirmary by the air ambulance and then transferred to Pendlebury children's hospital.

His condition deteriorated overnight and he died at about 04:10 BST this morning.

Police are not thought to be treating the death as suspicious.
