The family of Kamilah Peniston, the 12-year-old girl shot dead in Manchester on Monday, have spoken of their feelings after her death.

Kamilah, of Wembley Road, Gorton, died in Manchester Royal Infirmary on Monday evening after being shot in the head.

Issuing a statement today, Kamilah's family said she had strong ambitions in dance, music, sport and medicine.

They said they wanted "to express what a painful and difficult time we are facing coming to terms with the premature death of our beloved Kamilah".

"Kamilah, our princess, a natural-born entertainer… You excelled in everything you attempted and achieved. You had the ability to bring the sunshine into a room when you smiled.

"With our love and promises we will keep you deep in our hearts forever. You were an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace princess."

A 16-year-old boy was charged with Kamilah's murder at Manchester city magistrates court yesterday.

Greater Manchester police said they had recovered a handgun converted to fire live ammunition at the address where the shooting took place.
