Many mobile phone users could miss out on the opportunity to pay less for phone calls they make while abroad - unless they keep a close eye on which providers are lowering their tariffs following recent changes in legislation, a new report reveals.

The European parliament today announced that it had voted to lower the charges for using mobile phones in European countries - and the National Consumer Council (NCC) says consumers should act now to make sure they reap the benefits.

"This is great news for consumers. For too long mobile phone operators have been overcharging holiday makers and travellers," Carl Belgrove, an NCC economist, commented.

"The introduction of a cap on tariffs means that people will be making substantial savings when making calls to friends and family in the UK. It will also reduce the amount we pay for receiving calls by up to 75 per cent.

"But there is a danger that people jetting off on their holidays this summer could miss the boat completely," he continued.

"If companies do not act quickly, it could take months for people to reap the benefits of these lower prices. We are urging consumers to contact their service providers to check what tariff they are on before they go on holiday."
