Brits are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of protecting themselves and their belongings, a new report reveals.
The study, from Legal & General, shows that people in the UK are still taking great steps to ensure that they remain safe in their neighbourhoods - despite the fact that the chance of becoming a victim of crime has decreased during the last decade.
According to the Legal & General report, close to 35 per cent of Brits won't open their door to strangers - and one quarter insist on having a burglar alarm installed in their property. Around one-fifth have installed fitted window bars or security lighting, while a similar proportion rely on a dog for protection.
"The 'Safety Uncovered' research shows that more than half the population (52 per cent) are worried about crime," Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal & General's general insurance business, commented.
"As a major manufacturer of insurance products in the UK it is encouraging to see the steps people are taking to safeguard themselves and their belongings. Installing a burglar alarm, good quality locks and security lighting or living in a Neighbourhood Watch area can all help to deter a burglar entering a person's home."
