Brits have spent more than £90 billion on converting unused attics, garages, cellars and sheds into living space, a new study reveals.
A report from AA Home Insurance shows that around 20 per cent of Brits have decided to convert parts of their homes, with over a quarter saying that they had undertaken such projects in order to increase the value of their homes.
Around one-fifth said that they had converted additional space because they wanted to make the most of the room they had, while 17 per cent conceded that they had hoped to keep the 'dead' space as it was, but had been forced to revamp because they needed more room and couldn't afford to move.
"Many homeowners relish turning unused or ugly areas of their homes into liveable rooms as it means more space for family and less dusty boxes and clutter," Janet Pell, head of home insurance at AA Insurance said.
"But it is important that you ensure you have the appropriate building regulations approval before going ahead. And make sure you update your home insurance cover following an extension or conversion - your three-bed cottage might suddenly become a four-bed house - and of course, you'll have additional furniture and possessions, too."
