Obtaining travel insurance when you have a history of illness is difficult but "possible" - as long as you shop around, according to a leading general insurance organisation.
Steve Foulsham, a spokesman for the British Insurance Brokers' Association, says that its difficult for anyone falling outside of "Mr and Mrs Average" to obtain competitive travel insurance - but maintains that there are specialist firms that cater for customers with a medical history.
"The major suppliers of travel insurance … in the main [focus their business] on Mr and Mrs Average – and of course that tends to suggest that it's difficult for anybody who falls outside of that to obtain competitive travel insurance," he commented.
"It depends very much on the specific condition on how much they charge. But I think the important thing is that the cover is available to those with long term illness."
"Insurers calculate risk, and they clearly believe that if you do have a pre-existing medical condition then the likelihood of making a claim is that much greater than if you don't have one," he added.
