Worldwide broadband subscriptions are likely to exceed 536 million by 2011, with DSL networks accounting for over half of the market, according to a report released by Strategy Analytics.
The research firm estimates that Fiber (FTTx) and Wi-Max will be among the fastest growing technologies in the next five year, with broadband services revenue surpassing $150 billion (£74 billion) by 2011.
"Service providers cannot afford to stand still with current access technologies," said David Mercer, vice president of digital consumer practice at Strategy Analytics.
"Fiber-to-the-home will eventually provide the ultimate broadband experience for many users, including high definition TV and lightning-fast interactive web-based services."
By the end of 2007, global broadband subscriptions will reach 330 million, with DSL accounting for over two-thirds, according to Strategy Analytics.
A recent survey by consumer group Which? revealed that the average speed achieved by British consumers paying for an 8 Mbps connection is only 2.7 Mbps, with people in certain areas at the wrong end of the table receiving speeds as slow as 0.09 Mbps.
