Students hoping to insure their possessions get cheaper cover in halls of residence than they do in off campus homes, it has been claimed.

Rhiannon Harris, spokesperson for Endsleigh Insurance, says that off campus houses are exposed to a greater number of variables, while halls of residence usually have greater security, meaning that a differential in premiums exists.

"It is usually cheaper to insure in halls of residence than in a student home," Ms Harris commented.

"This is because we cover for all sorts of things as well as theft including flooding and burst pipes. It is slightly more expensive living off campus rather than on campus. Off campus is probably more expensive due to the higher number of variables.

"This includes things like locks and leaving windows open. A student hall of residence will have tighter security; obviously if you were in a shared house you wouldn’t have that level of security."
