Centrica, the UK's largest energy supplier, is planning to construct another big gas fired power plant, according to the latest reports.

The company says that it is looking at building the power station at one of its existing sites in East Anglia. It has two plants in the area, one at Kings Lynn and another at Peterborough - although it is not yet clear which site Centrica has earmarked for expansion.

It says that it wants to minimise construction costs and planning obstacles by building next generation units at its existing stations.

"We are reviewing our portfolio and while that's not fully completed, our initial findings show that there is at least one site and the site that we have indentified so far is in East Anglia, with the potential for 800 megawatts of additional generation," a spokesperson for the company is quoted by Reuters as saying.

Gas-powered plants are relatively easy to build and emit less carbon dioxide than coal or oil fired plants.
