Bristol and West Mortgages (BWM) has announced that customers can now apply for its mortgages on the internet.

The company's move into online applications has been made following the redesign of its website in April, while the new set-up has broken the mortgage process down into seven parts for customers to complete.

Alison Pallett, managing director of Bank of Ireland Personal Lending UK, which runs BWM under its Consumer Lending division, said she was "delighted" with the new feature.

"This is an exciting development and a significant improvement to our already popular consumer proposition. This is another example of our commitment to allow customers to choose how they get their mortgage products from us."

News on BWM's new application system comes after figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders revealed that the number of loans taken out by home buyers and those remortgaging fell in July.

The research also found that fixed-rate mortgages accounted for 79 per cent of the loans released in that month.
