Npower's Essex windfarm gets green light

Published on : 14/09/2007

>Npower is to commence construction of a windfarm project in Essex, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

The company's planned ten-turbine operation at Hockley Farm near Bradwell-on-Sea is expected to produce power for more than 10,000 homes upon completion.

Original plans for the farm were rejected by Maldon district council as it attempted to protect the landscape of the proposed site. However, Npower's appeal to the planning inspector acting on behalf of the secretary of state has been a success.

Commenting on the announcement Npower development manager Cath Stevenson said: "There is an urgent need to tackle the causes of climate change and wind farms are the most commercially and technologically advanced renewable to meet the challenge."

NPower provides electricity and gas to approximately 6.8 million customers across the UK and is regarded as a market leader in the development of renewable energy operations.

News of the new windfarm follows E.ON 's announcement that it is attempting to develop a prototype storage device for surplus electricity generated from renewable energy resources.
