The Liberal Democrats have revealed plans to introduce 'green mortgages' in a bid to promote energy efficiency to homeowners.

A party statement has also outlined the party's plans to make Britain carbon neutral by 2050.

Under the scheme, homeowners would be able to use savings from their low energy use to pay off part of their mortgage through their energy bill.

Other proposals outlined include a commitment to the production of completely carbon-free, non-nuclear electricity in the next 40 years.

Talking to BBC1's Breakfast programme about his party's agenda, Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell said: "We should be working towards a carbon-neutral Britain by 2050. We should be really radical in what we do – the urgency of the problem is really enormous."

Environmental issues are to be discussed today at the Lib Dem conference in Brighton, where members will debate the party's ten-point plan on climate change.

Global warming has remained a strong point of debate in recent months, with the Association of British Insurers recently revealing plans to improve the carbon footprint of its members and their customers.
