London's top electricity supplier EDF Energy has pledged to cut its carbon footprint by 60 per cent by 2020.
The French-owned company says that it will look to build new nuclear capacity - thus cutting CO2 production by around 12 million tonnes per year by the end of the next decade.
"Subject to UK government policy and public acceptability we will play our part in replacing the UK's ageing nuclear fleet over the next two decades," an EDF Energy spokesperson said.
The company said that nuclear power had to be part of the solution in order to effectively balance security of supply, climate change and energy prices. It will also look to develop new clean coal technologies, invest in 1,000MW of renewable electricity production and implement new gas turbine capacity.
"The EDF Group already has by far the lowest carbon dioxide emissions among all the major European energy companies," the company's chief executive Vincent de Rivaz said.
"Delivering these commitments in the UK will bring EDF Energy into line with the rest of the group."
