British Gas has announced that it has decided to lower its standard electricity prices in two regions of the UK, following an internal revue.

The reduction applies only to standard electricity tariff from British Gas and it equals a 1.2 per cent reduction in the Scottish Power area and a 1.49 per cent cut in the Manweb area. The company announced that this move would not precipitate a series of further price cuts however.

The reductions have been made only to make sure that their rates remain competitive across all parts of the UK, the company added. Experts regularly say that consumers should check their own rates upon the announcement of a price cut or rise, to make sure they remain suitable for them.

By doing this, energy buyers are often able to save a few hundred pounds per year for less than five minutes work - even if they have signed up to a new supplier fairly recently.
