The popularity of private health care is growing in the UK having recently undergone its first rise in uptake in years, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

A slight increase of 1.8 per cent in 2006 compared to the previous year was recorded, for a total of about 18,000 new private medical insurance customers, the figures revealed.

The ABI's director of general insurance and health Nick Starling was positive on the results, arguing the growth in private medical insurance would take some off the burden off the NHS.

Private medical insurance, he added, also offers people a greater range of services and treatments for medical conditions.

Mr Starling also commented that private medical insurance bought by companies on behalf of their employees had also seen a recent increase.

Corporate subscribers were up 4.1 per cent by 2006, double the figure of private ones.
