Two of the UK's largest energy firms have joined forces to put proposals for a new generation of nuclear power plants to British Energy.
Scottish & Southern Energy and Centrica have forwarded a joint proposal to the UK's largest electricity generator by volume, British Energy, which they hope will see them partner the electricity giant should the government give the go-ahead for more nuclear power stations.
Scottish & Southern and Centrica do not currently produce nuclear power - but both would be able to give British Energy vital access to retail consumers - and both already purchase a proportion of the nuclear power producer's output.
Other companies to have expressed an interest in forming a partnership include German power giants E.On and RWE, French firm EdF and Swedish nuclear company Vattanfall, the Sunday Telegraph says - but the government would welcome a UK-led consortium, the same report states.
British Energy said last week that it is looking for partners to help fund what is likely to be an £30 billion investment programme over the coming years, according to the Sunday Telegraph.
