Getting into debt is a part of modern student life - but youngsters could avoid getting into serious financial trouble while undertaking their studies by shopping around for the best deals on finance.

This is the opinion of Frances Walker, spokesperson for the Consumer Credit Counselling Service - who says that there are lots of good deals around for students if they take the time to search around for a suitable long-term solution.

"It's quite easy to look at [price comparison sites] and compare the best deals out there. Quite often they'll offer free overdraft facilities for a couple of years after they graduate, which they should take full advantage of," Ms Walker commented.

"Avoid expensive forms of credit, like credit cards … really look into the best student deals around … There are plenty of options out there."

"The first port of call when getting a loan should always be an official student loans company - as this is where students can access the cheapest finance offers," says Ms Walker.
