US fast-food chain McDonalds has announced that it will convert leftover oil from its fryers into biofuels to power its delivery fleet.
The company, traditionally the bane of environmental campaigners worldwide, says that the move will save around 1,700 tonnes of carbon every year once rollout is complete in 2008. This is the equivalent of removing around 2,400 vehicles from the road.
Around 20 of its delivery vehicles will be converted to run on a mixture of used cooking oil and pure rapeseed oil as the first step of the rollout begins in the southern country of Hampshire.
"We are delighted to now have a practical, efficient use for [the used cooking oil] within our own business," McDonald's senior vice president Matthew Howe said in a statement.
"This is a great example of how businesses can work together to help the environment," he added.
