Cutting business energy consumption is a win-win situation, it has been claimed.

Hugh Jones is solutions project director at the Carbon Trust - an independent company funded by government with the aim of helping the UK move to a low-carbon economy. He says that firms can make significant savings and help the environment by implementing simple and inexpensive green measures.

For example, turning off office computers at night could save businesses £6,000, he claims.

"By cutting energy consumption, businesses can save money and reduce their carbon emissions: it's a win-win situation," Mr Jones said.

"You don't need to invest in expensive new equipment to start saving. Whether large or small, most businesses can reduce energy bills by up to 20 per cent through no cost and low cost energy efficiency measures. "

He went on to outline the importance of the contribution businesses could make when it comes to efforts to move to a low-carbon economy.

"With business being responsible for 40 per cent of the UK's annual carbon emissions, it's vital that companies of all sizes reduce their energy use and cut carbon. Taking action does not need to be time-consuming or costly, and the benefits can be almost immediate."
