New trials of smart meters in the UK must not distract attention from the fast roll-out of the products, a leading UK energy group has warned.
Consumer energy watchdog energywatch was responding to a recent announcement from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and Ofgem, which detailed forthcoming two-year trials of smart meters and clip-on displays at 40,000 homes nationwide.
"These trials may add something to the large amount of knowledge already available in favour of smart meters but must not distract attention from a fast roll out of smart meters. Only smart meters can deliver the full benefits to consumers and a much more efficient industry," Jonathan Stearn, head of campaigns of energywatch, commented.
He added: "All the collective effort, investment and time must be spent on removing any obstacles for smart meters so British consumers can make a meaningful contribution to the battle against climate change."
energywatch recently released a report which explained the environmental, social and financial benefits the new meters would bring to UK customers.
