Next generation mobile broadband technologies, such as 3G Long Term Evolution (LTE), xMax and Mobile WiMax, have the potential to transform the entire industry, global consultancy firm Frost & Sullivan (F&S) has claimed.
It said that carriers were investing more time and effort into researching the potential of these emerging technologies, in order to find new ways to sustain their profitability and increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) generated in the future.
With only 38 per cent of the world's 6.6 billion people connected to a mobile network, these new technologies have the potential to make major inroads into the market, enabling providers to promote unlimited local and long distance voice calls and test messages at very low monthly prices.
"European carriers' dependence on voice to increase ARPU can no longer be a driving factor, given the prevailing saturated market and various alternatives such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and reduced local and roaming call charges due to regulatory policies," said Luke Thomas, F&S programme manager.
"As a result, carriers are now keenly looking at various next generation mobile broadband technologies so as to increase their ARPU in data applications and remain profitable in the long term."
