Taking out pet insurance with Animal Friends Insurance is a good investment - as you can be sure that any profits made will not go towards buying "the chairman a new yacht in the Caribbean", the company's managing director has said.

Elaine Fairfax, owner and founder of not-for-profit organisation Animal Friends Insurance, today launched a new life insurance package offering reductions of up to six per cent for vegans and vegetarians due to their reduced chance of contracting serious cancers and heart disease.

The company donates 100 per cent of its profits to animal charities worldwide.

"Animal Friends was set up in 1998 through my love of animals. Rather than setting up yet another charity and relying on people to give me the money I wanted to find a way of generating money to give to the charities. I thought pet insurance was an obvious vehicle for doing this," Ms Fairfax commented.

"We re-mortgaged our house twice and sold our souls a couple of times but in the five years we've been going we've got nearly 30,000 policy holders."

Policyholders receive reports of what the company has done with the money it has earned - and also forward suggestions of what they should do for future projects.

"It is quite a network and it's a really nice feeling because we're all working together for the same goal," Ms Fairfax commented.
