UK consumer watchdog energywatch has welcomed British Gas's decision to launch two new green energy products.
The products, one of which is a dual gas and electricity deal and the other an electricity-only tariff, are labelled Zero Carbon and Future Energy. The new offers should see the supplier produce almost 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources.
"It is encouraging to see British Gas making serious efforts at bringing innovative products into the green energy market," Allan Asher, chief executive of energywatch said.
"Work is also underway to develop an independent accreditation or rating scheme that will verify supplier claims about the 'greenness' of their energy products.
"energywatch and the National Consumer Council have long campaigned for consumers to be equipped with clear, transparent and verifiable information so that they can be confident of the benefits delivered by existing and new green products on the market."
Mr Asher went on to add that the independent rating scheme and the introduction of smart meters should become essential tools for consumers looking to make a difference to their energy consumption.
