CAT report 'flies in face of government negativity'

Despite government sentiment to the contrary, Britain could meet its EU target to generate 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020 - and in fact could significantly surpass this threshold, the Centre for Alternative Energy (CAT) has claimed.
The CAT was responding to a leaked government report from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Rugulatory Reform, which claimed that the UK would unable to meet its EU-imposed 2020 target.
Last month, the CAT released a report which it says demonstrates how Britain could power itself entirely with renewable energy - while reducing carbon emissions to zero - in the next 20 years.
The CAT's report called for the introduction of personal and industrial carbon allowances, which it said would allow "the safe promotion of trade, without fear of increasing emissions".
The CAT says that the UK has the largest potential renewable energy resource in Europe and claims that it has the potential to become a net exporter of renewable energy to the continent.
