Wind turbines and other contraptions aimed at producing renewable and environmentally-friendly energy will increasingly be built in urban areas, it has been claimed.

Dale Vince, managing director of Ecotricity, one of the UK's largest independent renewable energy developers, says that power firms will increasingly look to put their wind turbines in urban areas - as they attempt to overcome the planning problems that have so far blighted attempts to construct turbines in rural areas.

The Ecotricity managing director told the Guardian newspaper that getting permission to build on brownfield sites was "just so much easier".

"In rural areas we repeatedly come up against a minority of local residents and councils adopting the 'not in my back yard' approach," he said in an interview with the paper.

"It's the complete opposite in urban/industrial areas where such proposals have been largely welcomed," he added. "In some cases they have been approved straight away."
