British Gas has announced that it plans to cut hundreds of back office jobs by the end of the year.
The Centrica-owned energy unit says that it is hoping to slash 800 back-office roles by the year-end. Centrica had earlier announced that it would axe 500 jobs, but in its recent half-yearly report it stated that it was looking to cut a further 300 posts on top of this total.
All of the cuts will be from back office functions, as Centrica continues in its efforts to try and streamline the energy supplier.
"In the first half [of 2007], management's rigorous approach to efficiency and cost control continued," Centrica chairman Roger Carr said in the report.
"Headcount in the UK has been reduced by more than 1,000 and British Gas is part way through its restructuring programme designed to increase control and accountability, and deliver a significant reduction in its operating cost base."
British Gas made an operating profit of £533 million in the first half of 2007.
