People often forget to take out travel insurance or consider it non-essential - and end up shelling out hundreds of pounds as a result, one industry expert has claimed.
John Howells, head of travel at Post Office, says that number of people who do end up going abroad without travel insurance is "extremely alarming".
"According to recent research carried out by Post Office Travel Services, nearly half of holidaymakers questioned said they do not take out any travel insurance when they go abroad," he commented.
"The amount of people who have admitted to going on holiday without any cover at all is extremely alarming. Our figures prove that travel insurance is all too often forgotten in the excitement of getting ready to go on holiday, or even worse, it is considered by some to be non-essential."
He went on to state that something as simple and commonplace as losing a bag or having to visit a doctor could end up costing "hundreds of pounds".
"Why take the risk?" he concluded.
