It is "vital" that small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) reduce the amount of energy they use and cut carbon emissions, a leading UK body has said.

Hugh Jones, solutions project director at the Carbon Trust, states that SMEs can cut emissions by as much as 20 per cent through implementing a number of "low cost and no cost measures".

SMEs, which make up around 99 per cent of the businesses in the UK, accounted for around 18 per cent of all British CO2 emissions last year, according to the Carbon Trust's research. A range of measures affecting office equipment, lighting, air conditioning and heating could lower this proportion markedly, it says.

"Business is responsible for 40 per cent of the UK's annual carbon emissions, so it's vital that SMEs take action to reduce their energy use and cut carbon," Hugh Jones, solutions project director from the Carbon Trust, said.

"Action does not need to be time-consuming or costly, and the benefits can be almost immediate, in fact most companies can save up to 20 per cent through no cost and low cost measures."
