Two new advice booklets for those are thinking about getting credit and debit cards have been launched by APACS.

The UK payments association's new guidelines are designed to simplify personal finance for both young people and their parents.

'Choosing cards – a guide for under-18s' and 'Using cards – a guide for parents' also discuss the advantages of different cards to different people and outline tips to avoid card fraud.

Discussing the release of the new documents, APACS' director of communications Sandra Quinn said: "Being able to manage their personal finances is one of the most important life skills a young person can acquire, and these guides give both young people and their parents a useful introduction to some of the issues that they will face."

Figures from APACS recently revealed that 86 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds own either a credit or debit card, while many adults own on average 2.3 cards.

The new documents have been released after a study by Abbey found that many of the UK's cardholders are planning to reduce the number of cards they own.
