Broadband connections in the UK have been named as some of the slowest in Europe in new research.

The findings by the Information Technology Innovation Foundation (ITIF) also claim that connections in Finland are, on average, over eight times quicker than the speeds available in Britain.

Switzerland, Ireland, Turkey, Czech Republic, Spain and Greece were the only countries named below the UK in the survey of 23 countries across Europe.

Discussing the findings with the Daily Telegraph, head of broadband at moneysupermarket.com Jason Lloyd said that the UK's copper wire network wasn't as effective as the fibre optic technology used abroad.

The release of the ITIF's report comes after minister for competitiveness Stephen Timms recently revealed plans to increase the speed of the UK's broadband services.

Mr Timms said to the Broadband Stakeholder Group that the UK "can't afford to lag behind others" and that the government would do as much as it can to persuade companies to offer faster speeds to business and household customers.
