The UK's energy regulator has announced that it is seeking new measures to improve Britain's renewable energy drive.

Ofgem has claimed that new ways to speed up the connection of renewable energy sources to the national grid are needed to satisfy the current high demand for connections.

Discussing the body's findings, Ofgem chief executive Alistair Buchanan said: "Never before has the electricity network faced such demand for connection from new generations.

"We believe that whilst progress has been achieved, more can be done in prioritising the connection of those generators who have both planning permission and the finance to quickly construct their projects."

Ofgem's recommendations for improvements in connecting renewable energy sources to the national grid follows energy minister Malcolm Wicks' claim to the Herald that the government is to consider lowering connection charges in Scotland.

Mr Wicks spoke to the newspaper after addressing a British Wind Association conference in Glasgow.
