Six internet service providers (ISPs) in the UK have been urged to be clearer on their broadband offers by Ofcom.
The regulatory body's consumer panel chairman, Colette Bowe, has written a letter to the ISPs in an effort to encourage the companies to give customers more information on the speed and quality of their internet connections.
Computeractive recently released research on the subject, with the magazine's editor Paul Allen commenting that he was happy with Ofcom's decision to contact ISPs.
He explained: "We are pleased that Ofcoms Consumer Panel has noted the huge public support for our campaign and that it has decided to take action.
"The OCPs request for broadband customers to be advised of their likely connection speed echoes the key aim of our campaign, and we hope that ISPs respond positively to implement this by providing a typical rate to customers."
Ofcom's move to improve broadband services comes several weeks after minister for competitiveness Stephen Timms revealed his backing for the introduction of new technology to improve UK broadband speeds.
