Around 15 per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) do not have enough time to implement measures to reduce their carbon footprint, according to new research.

The findings by Lloyds TSB Business and the Open University's SERTeam also claimed that nearly 60 per cent of the companies surveyed were aware that consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about the environment.

Commenting on the study, Lloyds TSB Business's head of communications, Stephen Pegge, said the research made it clear that more information on climate change needs to be provided to firms.

He added: "Those firms that are taking steps to change are demonstrating that a lot can be done to make an impact – and these changes don't always cost the earth. Indeed, sensible management of energy, waste and travel usually saves costs."

One sector which has taken active steps to improve its carbon footprint is the insurance industry.

Guidelines were recently drawn up by the Association of British Insurers to help companies in the field promote climate-friendly behaviour to their customers.
