Lloyds TSB has warned rugby fans that getting too carried away while watching this weekend's World Cup final could lead to avoidable insurance claims.

The insurance broker made the warning after analysing its archives to have a look at some of the claims which were made around England's nailbiting victory over Australia three years ago.

It was discovered that one fan's home was blackened after a nylon England flag was left too close to an ashtray, while another fan spilt boiling oil over her kitchen when cooking during the game.

Discussing the company's findings, Lloyds TSB Insurance's managing director Phil Loney said: "As we gear up to support England once again on Saturday night, it's worth checking what your policy covers so, whatever the result, you know if your insurance will be there to help pick up the pieces."

Lloyds TSB's warning on home insurance claims has come after figures released by the Association of British Insurers revealed that 35 per cent of low-income households have no cover for their property.
