BT has announced plans to construct several windfarms in an effort to cut the company's carbon footprint by generating its own electricity.

The communications company, which is one of Britain's biggest electricity consumers, has applied for planning permission to install wind turbines at the company's sites in Cornwall, Orkney and Shetland.

It is thought that the £250 million project will help the company generate 25 per cent of its own power by 2016.

Commenting on the renewable energy proposals, BT Group's finance director Hanif Lalani said: "There is a pressing need for industry to cut carbon in ways that make business sense.

"BT has already achieved a 60 per cent reduction in its carbon emissions, and is committed to reducing them further to 80 per cent by 2016. Our wind energy plans play an important part in reaching that target."

BT is a leading provider of telecommunications services across the world, with business and domestic operations in around 170 countries.
