The UK's leading gas and electricity suppliers still have not got to grips with improving their customer service, according to an energy watchdog.

energywatch's spokesman Graham Kerr claimed that companies need to start taking positive steps to address the problems before energywatch's services finish in a year's time.

The comments have been released after the watchdog published a new report outlining performance figures for the "big six" energy suppliers in the UK market.

Mr Kerr said: "These figures show how most of the household names in the energy industry still have not got to grips with customer service.

"It is imperative that high quality complaint handling standards are adopted before energywatch's services disappear in October next year."

The release of the new report from energywatch has come around a week after the watchdog launched a new campaign with Utility Week and the Energy Retail Association to encourage the government to install smart meters in business and households across the UK.

It is hoped that the government will fit the new metering technology in every UK home within a decade.
