Homeowners who want new cover on their properties should consider shopping around to find the best deals, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
The body's assistant director of media relations, Jonathan French, also said that the installation of burglar alarms and secure locks can help to reduce the cost of premiums for a number of people.
He explained: "People can do things like ensure they have good quality locks on their doors and windows; they can ensure that when they leave the property unoccupied all the doors and windows are locked and secured.
"And on a wider basis, by shopping around within the home insurance market, which is very competitive, they can find really good deals out there."
Mr French added that increasing the voluntary excess paid on insurance cover can help save money on monthly payments for premiums.
With around 400 member companies, the ABI represents the interests of all its members on policy issues and encourages high standards of practice in the sector.
