British Gas's improvements to its customer service are "showing real results" in the face of criticism, according to the company's managing director.

Phil Bentley has stated that recent figures from energywatch, which claimed that British Gas has the worst customer service record of the UK's major energy suppliers, failed to recognise the changes made to the service in the last six months.

He said: "The actions we have taken to overhaul our customer service are showing real results and we call upon energywatch to show an even handed approach and recognise the considerable improvements we have made in the last six months.

"We still have much to do but we've led the market on lowering prices - Click 4 is still the cheapest tariff on the market - and we have made real progress on delivering better customer service as well as leading on the fuel poverty and green agenda."

British Gas is one of the UK's biggest energy suppliers, providing commercial and household gas and electricity services across England, Scotland and Wales.
