The UK does not face the prospect of power shortages this winter, according to energy minister Malcolm Wicks.

In a speech to the Energy Networks Association, the MP stated that the National Grid's request for more power to be generated in Britain was not a problem and actually showed the strength of UK's energy market.

Concerns had been previously raised that the request implied the UK's supplies are to be short this winter, meaning customers would have to be charged more for the service provided by their energy suppliers.

However, Mr Wicks said: "My advice to people worried by media reports is to look at what the experts at National Grid are telling us about electricity supplies, and look at the latest figures on gas supply. There is no cause for alarm."

Worries about the UK's energy supplies this winter have come around a week after the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform released a report outlining the future of Britain's energy resources for the next 15 years.
