Driving carefully can help a motorist reduce their insurance premiums, according to the AA.

The company's spokesperson, Ian Crowder, said that while many insurance companies may choose to ignore a driver's first offence, several others may consider raising the cost of their premiums.

He added that drivers who try to move to a new insurance company after being convicted of a motoring offence may struggle to find an insurance broker willing to provide cover for them.

Mr Crowder explained: "Your existing insurance company will probably stick with you. But if you try to move to a new insurance company you will find that several will prefer not to quote.

"If you get disqualified, but you subsequently get a clean record, you will find it difficult to find somebody who will give you cover – and when you do, it will be extremely expensive."

The AA provides a variety of financial services to customers across the UK, including breakdown cover, insurance and loans.
