Around a third of people in the UK have confessed to hiding a financial secret from their partners, according to new research.

Cater Allen's study also found that 27 per cent of women have lied to their partners about the cost of clothes they have bought, while 28 per cent of men have bent the truth over the cost of new gadgets.

The findings also revealed that 25 to 34-year-olds are the most likely age group to not tell their other halves about their finances, while 24 per cent of people do not think that those in a relationship should have a joint account.

Cater Allen managing director Richard Dunn said: "While it has traditionally been considered bad manners to talk about money, this research shows that modern Britons are not comfortable with being upfront about their financial affairs too."

With Christmas fast approaching, consumers may become more compelled to lie about the cost of items.

Research by payment association APACS recently predicted that £53 billion will be spent in the UK over the festive period.
